Men's Soccer Championship
South Easton, Mass. – Southern New Hampshire University has
claimed the 2008 Northeast-10 Men’s Soccer Championship with
a 1-0 win over fourth seed Le Moyne College (13-5-3) Saturday
afternoon at Larkin Field on the campus of Southern New Hampshire
University in Manchester, N.H.
Southern New Hampshire (15-2-4), the second seed in this
year’s championship, won their third Northeast-10
championship in school history and their first since 2002. The
Penmen won their first championship in 2000.
The Penmen jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Matt Delaney
(Wallasey, England)Kevin Woods (Alyth, Scotland) scored off a
header from a corner kick pass from Adrian Schippers (Ashby, Mass.)
and at the 18th minute. Delaney was named the championship’s
Most Valuable Player.
The Penmen would hold on to the lead throughout the first half and
entered halftime leading 1-0 as their defense held Le Moyne
scoreless during the first half limiting the Dolphins to three
shots.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Le Moyne came close to
tying the game with a free indirect kick inside the box, however
the Southern New Hampshire defense was able to deflect the shot
attempt and hold on to the 1-0 lead.
As the second half progressed both teams had scoring
opportunities, however the defense for Le Moyne and Southern New
Hampshire kept each other’s offense from scoring.
The Penmen and Dolphins exchanged corner kicks in the final
minutes of regulation as both teams were held scoreless in the
second half. Southern New Hampshire would hold on for the 1-0
victory as goalkeeper Sean Lambert (Rehoboth, Mass.) recorded his
11th shutout of the season. Le Moyne’s goalkeeper Steve White
(Cortland, N.Y.) made three saves in net.
Le Moyne’s Sean Lawlor (Kirkham, Preston) and Brandon Morse
(Lima, Ohio) were named to the All-Championship team along with
Southern New Hampshire’s Delaney, Richard Kentich (Kingston,
Jamaica) and Woods.
Stephen Blaisdell (Assumption), Harris Smirko (Bentley), Frantz
Francois (Franklin Pierce ), Jamie Wangia (UMass Lowell), Matt
Sanderson (Merrimack) and Andrew Esposito (Southern Connecticut)
round out the All-Championship team.
With 15 member institutions the Northeast-10 is the second largest
NCAA Division II athletic conference in the nation. Its 23
championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500
student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II
conference.

Le Moyne and Southern New Hampshire Set To Face Off For NE-10 Championship
The Northeast-10 Men's Soccer Championship Final is set to feature
#4 Le Moyne College and #2 Southern New Hampshire at 3 p.m.
Saturday at Larkin Field on the campus of Southern New Hampshire
University in Manchester, N.H.
Franklin Pierce's inadvertent use of an ineligible player in the
November 5 semifinal match against Southern New Hampshire has
resulted in the Penmen advancing to tomorrow's final.
Southern New Hampshire is appearing in their fourth Northeast-10
Men's Soccer Championship for the first time since 2002. The Penmen
won the NE-10 championship in 2000 and 2002. Southern New Hampshire
is led by the 2008 Northeast-10 Player of the Year, Adrian
Schippers. An All Northeast-10 First Team selection, Schippers
currently has eight goals and five assists for 21 points this
season. Paulson Edum has also scored eight goals for the Penmen and
has assisted on three others for 19 points. Sean Lambert, the 2008
NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Year, leads the conference in goals against
average (0.36), save percentage (.854) and shutouts (10).
Le Moyne is advancing to their first championship final since 2005
after defeating top seed UMass Lowell 2-1 in double-overtime during
the semifinals. This will be the Dolphins third appearance in the
championship final winning their first title in 2005 with a 1-0
victory over Franklin Pierce.
Le Moyne entered halftime leading 1-0 after Jesse Carr scored with
a looping shot from the top of the box from Brandon Morse.
The Dolphins led a majority of the second half until the 71st
minute when UMass Lowell's Stephen Potcner tied the game at 1-1
with his ninth goal of the season. The game would remain tied
throughout the remainder of the second half and through the first
overtime period. However, minutes into the second overtime period
Le Moyne's Sean Lawlor scored the game-winning goal off a free kick
to give the Dolphins the 2-1 victory. Le Moyne's Steve White made
five saves in net.
Matthew Pecheone leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and five
assists for 27 points, while Angelo Reina is second with eight
goals scored and two assists for 18 points. Goalkeeper Steve White
has kept opponents to under one goal per game (0.91) and has a .750
save percentage in net.
Top Four Teams Advance in
Northeast-10
Men's Soccer Championship
The top four seeds in the 2008 Northeast-10 Men's Soccer
Championship field have advanced to Wednesday's semifinal contests.
Top seed UMass Lowell will host #4 Le Moyne, while #2 Southern New
Hampshire hosts #3 Franklin Pierce. Both contests are scheduled for
5 p.m.
#1 UMass Lowell 4, #8 Bentley 1
Bentley's Jimmy Alexander scored the games first goal midway
through the first half to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. However,
UMass Lowell responded with a game-tying goal at the 31st minute
from Jeffery Danso. With the game tied 1-1 with 35 seconds
remaining in the half, Danso struck again with a header off a cross
pass from Jose Esteves to give the River Hawks a 2-1 halftime lead.
UMass Lowell would tack on two more goals in the second half both
coming from Jamie Wangia to secure the 4-1 victory. River Hawk's
goalkeeper Ryan Richards made four saves in net.
#4 Le Moyne 2, #5 Merrimack (Le Moyne Advances 4-3
PKs)
Merrimack jumped out to an early first half lead when Merrimack's
Wayne Sygrove scored off a free kick at 7:56. The Warrior's lead
didn't last long as Le Moyne's Angelo Reina scored off a break-away
punt from goalkeeper Steve White to tie the game at 1-1. The game
remained tied entering halftime, however that wouldn't last for
long. Merrimack's Eric Gomes scored off a rebound assist by Sygrove
at the 47th minute. Again, the Warrior's lead didn't last as Le
Moyne's Brice Rudat tied the game at 2-2 at the 73rd minute. The
game remained tied throughout the remaining of regulation and two
ten-minute overtime periods resulting in a penalty kick shootout.
The Dolphins would outlast the Warriors 4-3 in kicks and were
declared the match winners.
#2 Southern New Hampshire 1, #7 Assumption 0
After playing a scoreless first-half, Southern New Hampshire
finally broke the ice scoring the games first goal at the 57th
minute in the second half. Paulson Edum scored off an assist from
Adrian Schippers to put the Penmen up 1-0 and eventual win.
Southern New Hampshire outshot Assumption 11-6. Penmen goalkeeper
Sean Lambert posted his ninth shutout of the year without recording
a save or facing a shot on goal. Assumption's Brandon Sullivan
recorded four saves in net.
#3 Franklin Pierce 2, #6 Southern Connecticut 1
(OT)
Third seeded Franklin Pierce and sixth seeded Southern Connecticut
played through a scoreless first half before the Owls scored the
games first goal at the 54th minute of the second half. Djordje
Jankovic scored his second goal of the season off a cross pass from
Ian Serrao. The Owl's lead didn't last long as Franklin Pierce's
Viktor Goncalves scored his 12th goal of the year off an assist
from Tom Reilly at the 57th minute. The game would remain tied as
regulation expired, however in the first overtime period Frantz
Francois scored the game-winning goal with under two-minutes
remaining in overtime. The Ravens outshot the Owls 17-4 and held a
9-1 advantag on corner kicks. Southern Connecticut's Andrew
Esposito made nine saves in net.
