NE-10 Softball Championship
South Easton, Mass. – Le Moyne College claimed its
second-straight Northeast-10 Championship after defeating Southern
Connecticut State University 3-0 Sunday afternoon.
The Northeast-10 Player of the Year Jennifer Farrelly (Latham,
N.Y.) pitched a complete game shutout to earn her 17th victory of
the year to lead Le Moyne past Southern Connecticut. Farrelly
struck out seven batters and scattered seven hits in the
victory.
Le Moyne took the games first lead in the third inning when junior
Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, Mass.) drove in the first run of the
game with an RBI single. Schweikert, the championships most
outstanding player, finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Later in the
inning, freshman Barbara Shea (Clifton, Park, N.Y.) added an RBI
single as well to increase the lead to 2-0.
The Dolphins would add an insurance run in their half of the
seventh off a solo homerun from Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y.) to take a
3-0 lead. In the bottom half of the seventh, Farrelly retired the
first two hitters before Southern Connecticut loaded the bases with
the potential winning run at the plate. Despite the threat,
Farrelly and the Dolphins were able to retire the final batter and
secure the 3-0 victory.
Southern Connecticut Christina Wolfe (Newtown, Conn.) was 2-for-3
at the plate, while Megan Caporossi (Northfield, Conn.) and
Julianne Flood (Poughquag, N.Y.) combined for four hits.
Joining Schweikert on the All-Championship team were teammates
Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y.) and Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y.).
Southern Connecticut’s Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.), who
pitched a complete-game shutout versus New Haven earlier in the
day, and Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) were also named to
the All-Championship team.
The rest of the All-Championship team includes American
International’s DeAnna Zanetti, Assumption’s Marissa
Palumbo, Merrimack’s Jill Gagnon, New Haven’s Nicole
Downs, Pace’s Christina Pane and Southern New
Hampshire’s Kelsey Griffin.
With 15 member institutions the Northeast-10 is the second largest
NCAA Division II athletic conference in the nation. Its 23
championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500
student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II
conference.
