Assumption and Franklin Pierce Receive NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament Bids
South Easton, Mass. – Hours after facing each other for the
Northeast-10 Championship, the Assumption College Greyhounds and
Franklin Pierce University Ravens were among the 48 teams selected
to participate in the 2009 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship.
After winning its third straight Northeast-10 Championship,
Franklin Pierce received the NE-10’s automatic qualifying
bid, while Assumption (32-18-1) received an at-large bid.
Franklin Pierce (36-16) will serve as host of the East Regional
which features six teams. The Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference received two bids as Wilmington University (27-27)
earned the automatic qualifier after winning the CACC Championship
and at-large selection Dominican College (37-12). The East Coast
Conference will be sending two teams as well, including automatic
qualifier Adelphi University (31-14) and at-large selection Dowling
College (30-15).
The NCAA Championship includes eight regional sites that will host
double-elimination tournaments that will be played at on-campus
sites starting Thursday, May 14. Game times for the East Regional
are still to be determined and should be announced early this
week.
The regional champions will advance to the double-elimination
championship finals May 23-30 at the USA Baseball National Training
Complex in Cary, N.C.
With 15 member institutions the Northeast-10 is the second largest
NCAA Division II athletic conference in the nation. Its 23
championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500
student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II
conference.
