WILSON, NC ? Sophomores Earl Oakes (Bristol, CT) and David Qualben (Brooklyn, NY) were selected to the Coastal Plains League All Star Game, held at Fleming Stadium in Wilson, NC. Oakes was chosen to play for the National CPL All Stars while Qualben pitched for the American CPL All Stars. The National team won, 5-3.
Oakes, representing the Petersburg Generals, held the American All Stars hitless over one inning pitched, while striking out two of the three batters he faced. For the season, Oakes has appeared in 16 of Petersburg?s 36 games, posting a 0.44 earned-run-average with 10 saves. Oakes has allowed just one run over 20.1 innings pitched while striking out 18 batters. This past season, Oakes emerged as one of top relief pitchers in the Northeast-10 Conference, saving a school record nine games while holding opponents scoreless over 18.2 innings pitched for the year. Oakes gave up just nine hits while striking out 24 and holding opposing hitters to a .136 batting average.
Qualben also had a solid outing, allowing one hit in one inning pitched while striking out one batter and holding the National All Stars scoreless. Pitching for Wilson Tobs this season, Qualben has posted a 3-2 record with a 1.17 ERA. Qualben has allowed just six earned runs over 46 innings pitched while striking out 47. He also has two complete games and one save while holding opposing hitters to a .176 batting average. Qualben was the Setters top pitcher this season, finishing with a 6-3 record and a 1.19 earned-run-average. Qualben also struck out a Pace single season all-time high 84 batters while working 68.1 innings. Qualben had 10 or strikeouts in four of his 11 games pitched, while also striking out a Pace all-time high of 16 against Southern New Hampshire on April 7, 2005. Qualben was named to the Northeast-10 Conference first team, the National Collegiate Baseball Writer?s Association All-Region first team as well as gaining Honorable Mention on the NCBWA All-American team. Qualben was also named the Pace Athletics Co-Male Athlete of the Year, sharing the honor with teammate Matt Reilly.
