Northeast-10 Weekly Notes:
UMASS LOWELL: The River Hawks earned their third consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament this past week. UML garnered its second straight No. 1 seed, earning a bye through the quarterfinal round. The River Hawks will be playing their first ever NCAA Tournament at a neutral site, as UML hosted the last two tournaments. UML's best finish at in the NCAAs is second place, falling to Bloomsburg 4-1 in the championship game in 2003STONEHILL: Playing in its first-ever NCAA Division II championship tournament, Stonehill advanced to the national semifinals with its fourth victory in as many meetings over 2004 national runner-up Bentley, as the largest crowd ever to witness a home match (744) saw the Skyhawks post their third shutout triumph of the season over the Falcons in the North Region national quarterfinals. Sophomore F Aly Boulis (Lincoln, R.I.), who earned MVP honors after netting the overtime game-winner in the Northeast-10 championship, collected her third game-winning tally of the season in Saturday's triumph, as Stonehill extended its school-record winning streak to 15 straight (the longest such skein currently in Division II) while also extending its school-record single-season win total to 19. The shutout was the 10th of the season for the Skyhawks, as sophomore G Dani Ryder (Gloucester, Mass.) now has 19 career blankings to her credit. Stonehill will now square off with UMass Lowell in the NCAA Division II national semifinals on Friday afternoon at Shippensburg's Robb Sports Complex in Shippensburg, Pa. That match will mark the third meeting of the season between the two squads, as the River Hawks handed the Skyhawks their last setback with a 3-2 win on September 14th and Stonehill avenged that loss with a 2-1 overtime win in the Northeast-10 championship match, snapping UMass Lowell's 16-match winning streak. The NCAA Division II national championship match is set for Sunday afternoon at Shippensburg beginning at 1:00 p.m. Stonehill, which has more wins (19) than goals allowed (16), has held opponents to one or fewer goals in 19 of its 21 matches to date. Stonehill has now won five of its last eight matches with Bentley dating back to October 2003 after dropping its first 15 outings with the Falcons over a seven-year span. Saturday's win was the 80th career triumph for Skyhawk head coach Pam Arpe, who also took the Stonehill women's tennis team to the NCAA East Regional last May. Field Hockey becomes the third sport in Stonehill history to advance to an NCAA semi-final round, as women's basketball (1995) and women's lacrosse (2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005) also turned that trick. The Skyhawks finished the season ranked fourth in the final STX/NFHCA Division II national pollBENTLEY: Junior and NE-10 Co-Player of the Year Mary Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) finished the season with 163 career points, 25 shy of the Bentley, Northeast-10 and Division II record. Her 56 points this season tied her for the fifth most productive season in school history. Classmate Lindsey Harrington (Atkinson, N.H.) finished her junior year fourth on Bentley's all-time scoring list with 122 points.
