COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael’s College field
hockey team is making their longest trip of the season – by
far – this week, as the Purple Knights will embark on an
eight-day, three-country European tour of Belgium, Germany and the
Netherlands.
The team is scheduled to leave John F. Kennedy International
Airport today (Aug. 11) at 5:55 p.m., and arrive in Brussels,
Belgium, on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. local time. The Purple Knights
will conduct their first professional training session on Wednesday
at 4 p.m., and play their first game of the trip on Thursday versus
HC Bonn at 7 p.m.
On Friday, Saint Michael’s will hold its second and final
professional training session at 4 p.m., followed by a game with HC
Meerssen at 8 p.m. After an off-day Saturday, the Purple Knights
conclude the trip with games on Sunday versus HC Kerkrade at 11
a.m., and on Monday, Aug. 18 against HC Tegelen at 7 p.m. The team
then returns to the United States on Tuesday, Aug. 19.
The overseas trip is a precursor to Saint Michael’s normal
preseason camp held on campus, which leads up to the Purple
Knights’ regular-season opener at Stonehill College on
Sunday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m.
The fundraised trip is led by Carla Hesler, who begins her 10th
season as Saint Michael’s head coach this fall and is the
second-winningest coach in program history with a 103-68 record.
Saint Michael’s went 9-11 last season, advancing to the
Northeast-10 Conference Semifinals, and return senior Andrea Slaven
(Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick), last year’s NE-10 Player of
the Year.
