COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College has announced that Brian Bova, the top assistant coach with the men’s ice hockey program last season, has been named the head coach of the Purple Knights’ golf team.

Bova will remain a full-time assistant coach with the men’s ice hockey team. He replaces Chris Davidson ’99, who recently resigned as golf coach following four years at the helm of the NCAA Division II Purple Knights. Davidson, meanwhile, will return for his second season as head coach of the Saint Michael’s men’s ice hockey program in 2008-09.

“I’m extremely excited to become just the eighth golf coach in Saint Michael’s history, and grateful to (Athletic Director) Geri Knortz and (Senior Associate Athletic Director) Zaf Bludevich for selecting me,” said Bova. “We have a solid core of returning players coming back, and I’m looking forward to improving on the team’s recent success.”

Bova is currently employed at the Burlington Country Club, where Saint Michael’s practices during the fall and spring. He takes over a team that finished 24th out of 42 institutions at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships last season, a tournament that features teams from all three NCAA divisions.

Bova played four years of ice hockey at the University of Massachusetts Lowell from 2002-06, earning All-Academic honors from the Hockey East Association following the 2004-05 season. Bova was also named the squad’s Most Improved Player that same season, when he tallied a career-high six goals and 33 games played for a squad that won 20 games. After a career-ending injury as a senior, Bova served as an undergraduate assistant hockey coach for the 2006-07 season before earning his bachelor’s degree in sociology in June.

In his first season coaching at Saint Michael’s last year, Bova helped the men’s ice hockey team capture the Northeast-10 Conference regular season and tournament championships.
