May 25, 2006

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Two Assumption College student-athletes have earned spots on their respective ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America At-Large District I Academic Teams for outstanding performances as both students and athletes.

Those cited were senior lacrosse captain and standout JENNY MONGEAU (Westboro, MA/Westboro), the Greyhounds' career leader in goals and points and a two-time all-American on-the-field, and junior tennis captain and standout MATT STOPP (Altoona, PA/Altoona), a six-time first-team conference all-star.

Mongeau earned CoSIDA third-team academic all-American honors last year and has been on the all-district first-team in each of the last two years. This is Stopp's first citation by CoSIDA. Both are now eligible for the 2006 academic all-America team to be selected in the next few weeks.

Assumption College has had 21 student-athletes since 1967 named academic all-America a total of 29 times. Six including tennis/golf standout James Newman (2005, 04), basketball's Stacy Mattioli (2001, 00, 1999), basketball/softball's Shonda Becker (1989, 90), baseball's Jack Lepore (1985, 86), basketball/baseball's Larry Mehall (1980, 81) and baseball's Mike Pananos (1976, 77) have been cited more than once.

Mongeau, who was graduated summa cum laude Saturday is one of a rare group at the College with a triple major---Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics---and finished with a 3.75 grade point average. She has been accepted at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester for post-graduate study.

She finished her career with 188 goals, 33 assists for 221 points---joining just 33 other student-athletes in N.C.A.A. Division II history with as many as 200 points. Her 188 goals is the 20th best career total in Division II history. She is the only Greyhound with two 50-goal seasons and three 40-goal seasons and is ranked fourth in Northeast-10 Conference history in goals and fifth in points. She scored 36 goals with three assists for 39 points this past season.

She won the Rev. Armand Desautels, A.A. Memorial Award earlier this month as the Assumption College Premier Female Senior Student-Athlete. In her career she earned first-team all-conference honors three times and second-team once. She was also named to the 2005 all-America teams of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association (IWLCA/US) (second-team), LaxPower.com (second-team) and InsideLacrosse.com (first-team). The 2006 all-America teams have yet to be announced.

Academically she has earned a Director's Citation from the athletics department for achieving at least a 3.5 grade point average in each of her eight semesters. She also was on the Northeast-10 Conference and IWLCA all-academic teams in both 2005 and 2006.

Stopp, who finished 16-2 at No. 3 singles is now 47-3 in his accolade-filled career. He also finished 17-1 at No. 2 doubles improving his career mark to an incredible 50-2. He carries a 3.89 grade point average as a Mathematics major.

He has earned a spot on the Northeast-10 Conference and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) all-academic teams in each of the last two years. Stopp has also been named first-team all-conference in singles and doubles in his three years and currently owns an unblemished conference career doubles record (32-0) and an impressive 31-1 singles record. He has also earned a Director's Citation from the athletics department for achieving at least a 3.5 grade point average in each of his six semesters.

The Greyhounds have won an impressive 103 consecutive matches against Northeast-10 Conference opposition including 19 straight in postseason play. They have won the conference regular-season and postseason championship for eight straight seasons.
