NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Selections Announced

South Easton, Mass - The NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Committee has selected the teams and 16 first- and second-round sites of the 2008 NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Championships. Three Northeast-10 team's were selected, including automatic qualifier Bryant University, Merrimack College and Stonehill College.

Bryant will face Adelphi University on either Thursday, May 8 or Friday, May 9 in First Round action at Bloomsburg University.  Host Bloomsburg will match-up with Merrimack.  On the other side of the bracket, host Stonehill will face Queens College, while Concordia will play against Philadelphia.

Bryant (20-3) earned the automatic bid after winning the Northeast-10 Championship last week over Stonehill. The Bulldogs are led by the Northeast-10 Player and Freshman of the Year, Cristian Balestrieri (Mar Del Plata, Argentina), who is currently 18-4 overall in No. 1 singles play and 10-3 at No. 1 doubles with partner Kevin Gardner (Powder Springs, Ga.).  Junior Jose Rodriguez (Trujillo, Peru) is 13-3 at No. 2 singles, while the duo of Rodriguez and Thomas Nowak (Medfield, Mass.) are 12-2 at second doubles.

Merrimack (10-6) finished third in the Northeast-10 this year, earning the team's first ever NCAA selection. Junior Adam Wilding (Lewiston, Maine) leads the way for the Warriors at first singles with an overall record of 9-5.  Teammate John Seaward (Pomfret, Conn.) is 9-3 overall at second singles. 

Stonehill (18-6) advanced to the Northeast-10 Championship match after finishing conference play at 9-1.  Freshman Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn.) is currently 9-5 at second singles and 14-5 overall, while he is 10-6 overall at first doubles with teammate Michael Mashkevich (Framingham, Mass.).  Junior Jason Allegretti (Lincoln, R.I.) is 9-5 at third singles and has an overall record of 16-5 on the year.

The championships consist of a 16-team single elimination tournament. Each of the following eight regions will conduct two first- and second-round tournaments: East, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, South, Great Lakes, Central, North Central and West.

Sponsoring 23 championship sports and 15 full-time members, the Northeast-10 is the second largest NCAA Division II athletic conference in the nation and sponsors the most championships of any Division II conference.
