Northeast-10 Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Matt Kavanagh, Saint Rose (Sr., Newburgh, NY) - Named Outstanding Male Athlete at the 2006 Metropolitan Conference Championships. Met three NCAA automatic qualifying standards by breaking his own school records with winning performances in the 50 (20.48), 100 (44.63) and 200-yard freestyles (1:39.22).

Northeast-10 Women's Swimming Co-Athletes of the Week

Carolynn Navarro, Southern Connecticut (Sr., Seymour, CT) - Had a winning time of 17:25.92 in the 1,650 for a meet record while qualifying for the NCAA championship. Had a winning time of 5:05.82 in the 500 freestyle and was a member of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:52.67.

Arden Brust, Bentley (So., Newark, NY) - Finished first in the 200 back (2:11.56) and the 400 IM (4:44.76), and set a record in the 100 back (1:00.69) as part of a relay. Helped Bentley win the 400 medley, 200 medley and 800 free relays.

Northeast-10 Men's Diving Athlete of the Week

John Wood, Southern Connecticut (Sr., Columbia, CT) - Set a meet record with a score of 553.75 points in the three-meter competition and won the one-meter event with 502.60 points.

Northeast-10 Women's Diving Athlete of the Week

Ali Bronson, Southern Connecticut (So., Torrington, CT) - Won the three-meter diving with a score of 445.80 points. Was second in the one-meter competition with 364.60 points. Qualified for the NCAA Division II championships.

Northeast-10 Men's Freshman of the Week

Andrew May, Southern Connecticut (Fr., Manteca, CA) - Set a meet record and qualified for the NCAA Division II championships winning the 400-yard individual medley at the Metropolitan Conference championships with a time of 4:03.08. Was second in the 200 IM (1:54.03) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:05.75).

Northeast-10 Women's Co-Freshmen of the Week

Rachel Heyer, Southern Connecticut (Fr., Stratford, CT) - Won the 50-yard freestyle (24.42 seconds) and was a member of the winning relay teams in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:34.77) and the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:52.67). Was a member of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.16).

Kristen Thuerk, Bentley (Fr., Cheshire, CT) - Captured the 200 freestyle in 2:01.05 and was a member of two winning relays, the 400 medley (school record 4:09.96) and the 200 medley (1:55.99). Finished second in both the 100 butterfly (1:00.66) and the 200 fly (2:16.42).

Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll:

MEN:

Arthur Engelhard, Bentley (So., Apalachin, NY) - Earned the Bruce Hutchinson Award as the Male Swimmer of the Meet at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships after scoring 78.5 of a possible 80 points and setting school records in six events (3 individual, 3 team). Was the individual champion in the 200 back (1:58.05), 100 back (52.98) and 50 back (24.82) and participated in three winning relays. Was a member of the second-place 400 free relay.

Sean Osit, Bentley (Jr., Acton, MA) - At the NEISDA Championships, earned gold in both the 400 IM (4:24.12) and 200 butterfly (2:00.59), and also finished second in the 100 fly (53.38). Was a member of two winning relays (200 medley, 400 medley) and finished second in the 800 free relay. School record of 1:38.31 in the 200 medley relay.

Bryan Stinchfield, Bentley (So., Darien, CT) - At the NEISDA Championships, captured gold in two individual events (200 Free, 1:45.87, and 100 Free, 48.39) and was a member of the winning 200 free relay (1:27.52). Also finished second in the 200 IM (2:04.26) and fourth in the 50 back (26.68), and swam on two silver-medal winning relays. Set school records in both 200 free and 200 IM, and helped set a record in the 200 free relay.

Michael Kaas, Saint Michael's (So., West Haven, CT) - Placed fourth overall in the 400-yard individual medley in the New England Championship with a time of 4:37.56.

Sean Ahern, Saint Rose (Fr., Burnt Hills, NY) - Twice set a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.42) at the 2006 Metropolitan Conference Championships. Was also part of six school record-setting relay teams.

Chris Haines, Southern Connecticut (Sr., Vernon, CT) - Was a member of three winning relay teams at the Metropolitan Conference championships. Was part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:05.26), which qualified for the NCAA Division II championships; the 800-yard freestyle relay team (6:52.50); and the 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:23.64). Also qualified for the NCAA championships in the 200-yard freestyle, placing third in 1:40.36, and the 100-yard freestyle, finishing second in 45.67 seconds.

Dan Vitagliano, Southern Connecticut (So., New Haven, CT) - Qualified for the NCAA Division II championships in two. Won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:33.16 to pass the NCAA "A" standard, and had a time of 1:40.22, placing second in the 200-yard freestyle with another NCAA "A" standard. Was a member of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team (6:52.50) and placed third in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:13.65).

WOMEN:

Alison Lesher, Le Moyne (So., Sherrill, NY) - Won two individual events and helped four relays to top eight finishes as Le Moyne finished fourth in the 2006 NYSWCAA Swimming & Diving Championship. Shattered the association, championship and school record with a time of 2:04.85 in the 200 Butterfly. Also won the 500 free in a school-record 5:07.94. Also set a school mark in the 400 IM with a second-place 4:30.26.

Meghan Nugent, Le Moyne (Fr., Binghamton, NY) - Placed in A Final for two individual events and fourth in a relay at NYSWCAA Championship. Was third in the 1650 free (18:12.59) and seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:19.72) and helped the 800 free relay team to fourth place.

Ellie Hedden, Saint Michael's (Sr., Warwick, RI) - Placed fifth in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 28.27.

Sharon Bogdanski, Saint Rose (Jr., Middletown, NY) - Broke a 13-year-old school record with a winning time of 18:47.48 in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the 2006 Metropolitan Conference Championships. Was also part of three school record-setting relay squads.

Kelly Davidson, Saint Rose (Fr., Spofford, NH) - Was part of four school record-setting teams at the 2006 Metropolitan Conference Championships.

Morgan Schutz, Saint Rose (So., Pine Bush, NY) - Was part of four school record-setting relay teams at the 2006 Metropolitan Conference Championships.

Amy Browning, Southern Connecticut (So., Fort Worth, TX) - Won the 100-yard freestyle (52.69) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.34). Was also a member of winning relay teams in the 400-yard medley relay (3:59.83), the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:52.67) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:34.77). Placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.32) and was a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team, which placed second in 1:38.16).

Northeast-10 Weekly Notes:

BENTLEY: Bentley captured both the men's and women's titles at the New England Swimming and Diving Championships in convincing fashion. The women captured their fifth straight championship, with their 995 points more than double that of the second-place team, and the men made it a "three-peat", winning by 172 points. Including last week's diving events, the Bentley men won 14 of 25 events and the women earned gold in six of 25. In the process, school records were set in 12 events. Sophomore Arthur Engelhard (Apalachin, NY) was selected for the Bruce Hutchinson award as the Men's Swimmer of the Meet, and Mary Kay Samko was chosen as the NEISDA Men's Coach of the Year. In addition, Brianne Tulley (Chelmsford, MA) earned the Kay Fromer Award as the senior woman with the most career points in the meet LE MOYNE: The Dolphins finished fourth in the NYSWCAA Swimming & Diving Championship SAINT ROSE: The Saint Rose men's and women's swimming and diving teams set 22 school records at the 2006 Metropolitan Conference Championships, which were held at Rutgers University. The men's squad finished fifth among 17 competing institutions, while the women's club wound up ninth among 20 scoring teams. Senior Matt Kavanagh (Newburgh, NY) was named the meet's Outstanding Male Athlete after he met three NCAA Championship automatic qualifying standards by breaking his own school records with winning performances in the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyles. He is the only swimmer in school annals to represent the Golden Knights at the NCAA'sSOUTHERN CONNECTICUT: Southern's men and women dominated the competition at the Metropolitan Conference championships at Rutgers in winning the team championships. Ali Bronson won the three-meter women's diving and was second in the one-meter diving while John Wood won the men's diving on both boards, setting a meet record of 553.75 points in the three-meter competition. Teammate Ben O'Neill, like Wood a former Owls' gymnast, placed second in both diving events. All of the divers have qualified for the NCA Division II championships. Southern's women won the 400 medley relay, the 800 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay while placing second in the 200 freestyle relay. Senior Carolynn Navarro set a meet record and qualified for the NCAA championships in winning the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:25.92), some 36 seconds faster than the rest of the field. She also won the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Amy Browning won the 100 (52.69) and 200-yard (1:54.34) freestyle events and was a member of all four relays. Freshman Rachel Heyer had an outstanding meet for the women, winning the 50-yard freestyle (24.42) and was a member of two winning relays. For the men, freshman Andrew May set a meet record and passed the NCAA "A" qualifying standard with a time of 4:03.08 in the 400 IM. He was second in the 200 IM and the 1,650-yard freestyle. Senior Chris Haines was a member of winning freestyle relay teams at 200, 400 and 800 yards, including a NCAA "A" standard in the 200-yard relay. He also qualified for the NCAA championships in the 100 freestyle (2nd-45.67) and the 200 freestyle (3rd-1:40.36). Sophomore Dan Vitagliano won the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA "A" standard time of 4:33.16; had an "A" standard time of 1:40.22 for second in the 200 freestyle; and was third in the 1,650 at 16:13.65. Vitagliano was also a member of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team. The NCAA championships are March 8-11 in Indianapolis.
