ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team concluded its 2008 season with a 3-0 loss (25-13, 25-13, 25-15) to top-ranked Concordia University in the NCAA Division II Volleyball national quarterfinal. The defeat snaps the Chargers 27-match winning streak as they conclude the season with a 31-4 overall record.

With the win, Concordia moves on to the Final Four to take on Grand Valley State.

In the third set of Thursday's match, senior libero Katrina Ali set the career digs mark for New Haven. With nine digs on the night, Ali brought her career total to 1,561 surpassing the former mark of 1,559 held by Kathleen Higgins.

New Haven got off to a bit of a slow start, going down 3-0 before a kill by AVCA All-America First Team honoree Rhe-Ann Niles put the Chargers on the board. New Haven kept the set tight early on thanks to three kills by AVCA All-America Honorable Mention Charisse Cotton. With the score 10-8 in favor of Concordia, the Golden Bears scored eight of the next 10 points to take a commanding advantage in the set. The Chargers briefly got back on track as senior Brittani Cotton put down a kill followed by Niles and Charisse Cotton combining for a block. However, Concordia went on a 5-0 run late and took the first set.

The Chargers again struggled to find a rhythm in the second set, falling behind 14-5. From there on out New Haven sided out well but could not capitalize on their serve. The teams exchanged points until 21-12 when Concordia went on a 4-1 run to close out the set.

Unlike the first two sets, New Haven got off to a good start in set three. The Chargers led 7-6 on a kill by Charisse Cotton before Concordia rattled off four straight points to go up 10-7. A kill by sophomore Sara Malmlov closed the gap to two, but that is as close at New Haven would get. Concordia used four and five point runs to extend its lead to 22-13. The teams exchanged points before a Concordia kill sealed the match for Concordia.

The Chargers hit .131 for the match while Concordia's attack hit at a .425 clip. Concordia also out-dug New Haven, 43-27, and won the battle at the net with five blocks compared to one for the Chargers.

Charisse Cotton finished the match with a team-high seven kills and a block assist, while Brittani Cotton had six kills for New Haven. After a hot start, Niles totalled four kills and one block assist for the match.
