ALBANY – After leading The College of Saint Rose to an
historic 2008 season, head coach Laurie Darling Gutheil was
recently honored as the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America (NSCAA)/Adidas NCAA East Region Division II Coach of the
Year. The recipients are selected based on a vote of their peers
within their region. Darling Gutheil is now one of eight finalists
for National Coach of the Year honors, which will be announced on
January 16.
Saint Rose bolstered its standing as one of the most renowned
programs in NCAA II circles this past autumn. The Golden Knights
posted a 20-4-2 mark, set a school record with its 20 victories and
became only the fourth team since 1985 to win back-to-back
Northeast-10 Conference Championships. Saint Rose furthermore
earned its sixth NCAA Tournament berth within a seven year stretch,
wound up as the nation’s fourth ranked team according to the
final NSCAA poll and won the NCAA Tournament East Regional
Championship that led to the program’s first “Final
Four” appearance.
Saint Rose stood out academically as well with its eighth
consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Award. Furthermore, three players
garnered All-America accolades. Sophomore midfielder Amanda Deck
(Cicero, NY/North Syracuse) was a first-team pick, while senior
forward Kailey Egbert (Camp Hill, PA/Trinity) and sophomore
fullback Katie Whiting (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) garnered
third-team honors.
From a statistical perspective, the Golden Knights outscored their
opponents by a 57-22 margin, held a staggering 190-60 corner kick
differential and recorded 14 shutouts on the year. The future
appears bright as well, with nine starters expected to return next
season.
