Loudonville, N.Y. –  The College of Saint Rose women's soccer team won its third straight Northeast-10 Championship after defeating Franklin Pierce University, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Siena Turf Field on the campus of Siena College.

Saint Rose scored the game’s first goal late in the first half when sophomore Kimberly Morton (Westerly, R.I.) scored her fourth goal of the season in the 30th minute of action. Morton scored from 12-yards out toward the lower right side of the goal.

The Golden Knights defense limited Franklin Pierce to only four shots in the first half and held a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks as Saint Rose remained in the lead entering half time.

In the second half both teams combined for only five shots as Saint Rose continued to hold on to its 1-0 lead. In the 80th minute, the Golden Knights doubled their lead when freshman Carly Pengelly (Reno, Nev.) headed her third goal of the season into the net off a cross pass.

With Saint Rose in command 2-0, Franklin Pierce finally got on the board as junior Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden) scored her 17th goal of the season in the 89th minute of action.

Despite the last minute effort the Ravens were unable to get the neutralizing goal past the Golden Knight’s defense and goalkeeper Shannon Murphy (Charlton, Mass.). Murphy made two saves in net as Saint Rose secured the 2-1 victory.

Saint Rose junior Katie Whiting (Holden, Mass.) was named the ‘Most Outstanding Player’ of this year’s championship for her performance and was joined by teammates Amanda Deck (Cicero, N.Y.) and Brittany Godin (Rochester, N.Y.) on the All-Championship team. Also named to the All-Championship team from Franklin Pierce were senior Gabriela Demoner (Vitoria, Brazil) and Amanda Panaro (Rockland, Mass.).

Saint Rose continues its perfect season as the victory increases its win streak to 21 (21-0-0), while Franklin Pierce is now 16-4-1.

Both teams should be locks for an NCAA Tournament bid as the tournament field will be announced Monday night at 7 p.m. on ncaa.com.

With 16 member institutions the Northeast-10 shares the distinction of being the largest Division II conference in the country along with the PSAC and WVIAC. Its 23 championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II conference.
