Ruben Sanca was a standout distance runner for UMass Lowell, earning eight All-America honors while competing for the River Hawks. He helped lead UMass Lowell to three NE10 cross country titles, as well as a combined six runner-up finishes in cross country and track & field. Sanca was an NCAA qualifier in four different years in a multitude of events, including the 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter, while becoming a three-time NE10 Athlete of the Year and a five-time All-New England selection. He was named NE10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2009. Following graduation, Sanca would go on to represent Cape Verde in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. He is the second cross country and track & field athlete from UMass Lowell to enter into the NE10 Hall of Fame.
