Adelphi claims first NE10 Championship since 2017
Box Score
PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - If you're going to win the Northeast-10 Women's Lacrosse Championship, it's not going to be easy. Saturday at Northwell Stadium was no exception as the Adelphi Panthers claimed their first title since 2017 in a back-and-forth, 14-13 final over the top seeded Pace setters.
With the win, the last six NE10 Championships have now been decided by seven goals, with five being one-goal games. The exception is Pace's win over Adelphi in Pleasantville last season.
The Panthers darted to a 6-1 lead in the game's first nine minutes with goals coming from six different players, but the Setters weren't going down easy. Pace scored seven of the game's next eight goals to go ahead by one, highlighted by two scores on the extra-woman and two by Lissa Heffernan back-to-back to end the first quarter.
The Setter comeback was due, in no small part, to Sasha Kulo's masterful day on draw controls. Kulo won 11 herself, one fewer than Adelphi as a team. That possession time allowed Pace to outshoot Adelphi 33-22.
Adelphi locked down when it mattered most, scoring five of seven goals fro mthe end of the third into the fourth quarter. The Panthers defense did not allow a goal for nearly nine minutes during that span, giving the offense the space to go up three.
Pace did find a surge late, with an emotional goal from Maddie Schubert drawing the Championship Final to 14-13 with 1:47 reminaing, but Adelphi would not budge the rest of the way, capturing the team's first title since 2017. Six different teams have now won the NE10 Championship since AU's last win in 2017 - a span of just seven championship games.
Mackenzie Carita was the game's leading scorer with four goals for Pace. Julia Foppiano and Ashley Kolomechuk led Adelphi with a hat trick. Kolomechuk added four assists for a seven-point game. The Setters were really led in cage, however, where Madison Marchetta made nine saves in the win and was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player.
