NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass. - The Northeast 10 Field Hockey Championship runs through Worcester. With an 11-1 conference record, the Assumption Greyhounds claimed the outright Northeast 10 regular season championship Saturday, cementing homefield advantage throughout the league championship tournament, beginning Tuesday. The win marks the fifth straight season Assumption has claimed at least a share of the conference title.
The Greyhounds enter the postseason on a 10-game winning streak having conceded only six goals during conferece action, two in thier lone defeat to Southern New Hampshire in September. Elle Murray leads Assumption's offense with 12 goals, second-most in the conference. Defense, though, is where Assumption has shined. Fifth-year keeper Paige Gillette captains that defense as one of two NE10 goalies to allowed less than one goal per game this fall. Jillian McSorely has also provided a shot in the arm, anchoring the left back spot since returning from injury earlier this month.
Saint Anselm, the reigning NCAA DII National Champion, is the No. 3 seed following a 10-2 conference slate. The Hawks ended the regular season with five consecutive shutout and suffered only two 1-0 losses within the league: one to Assumption and another to Adelphi, both on the road. Keeper Mackenzie Wehrum is the league's leader in goals against average in her first year as a starter. The Hawks only grew stronger as the season progressed, replacing nine starters from last season's No. 1 team.
The Hawks and Hounds have met in each of the last two NE10 Championship Finals, splitting the set with both being played in Worcester.
Adelphi was a revelation this fall, even cracking the NFHCA Top 10 in October. The Panthers earn the No. 2 seed with a 10-2 record and the league's leading scorer Lana Mignon De Wet. The South African posted 22 goals so far this fall, jumping in and out of the national lead. Jena Geels leads the NE10 in assists atop the conference's fourth highest rated offense.
Bentley earned the final home game in the quarterfinals. The Falcons are one of two NE10 teams holding a win over champion Assumption this fall, knocking off the Greyhounds at home in an early non-conference meeting.
There were two ties in the standings with Adelphi and Saint Anselm along with SCSU and Franklin Pierce. Both ties were broken with head-to-head results.
