WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University men's ice hockey team won their second Northeast 10 Conference Championship for the second time in three seasons, and their third in five seasons, following a 5-4 win over Saint Anselm College, Saturday evening at the Worcester Ice Center.

Score: Assumption University 5, Saint Anselm College 4
Records: Greyhounds (23-8-2, 15-3-2 NE10) | Hawks (14-14-4, 11-7-2 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption was the first team to score, as
Jonathan Surrette forced a turnover at the blue line before sending a cross-ice pass to
Brett Cunningham, who wristed a shot past the Saint Anselm netminder to the top glove side, five minutes in. The game would head into the second period with the Greyhounds leading 1-0, but the Hawks tied the game early in the middle frame, with Justin Tremblay scoring an unassisted tally. The Hounds answered back with a goal from
Dean Simeone five minutes later.
Patrick McKiernan doubled Assumption's lead with under five minutes left in the second period, as he went coast-to-coast and scored with a low-angle shot.
The Hounds took a 3-1 lead into the third period, before they were assessed two quick penalties to go on a 5-on-3 penalty kill. The Northeast 10 Conference Player of the Year,
Jonathan Surrette, captured all of the momentum, as he scored a shorthanded goal, making it 4-1 with 11:44 left in regulation. Saint Anselm added a tally just over a minute later, but Surrette would strike again, making it 5-2 with 5:25 showing on the game clock. The Hawks would pull their goalie and score twice in the final minute, but Assumption would come out on top with a 5-4 final score.
