Adelphi's Morgan Salmon Named NE10 Woman of the Year

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Salmon is Second Adelphi Athlete to Earn Honor in Past Three Seasons.

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Joining a long list of famed winners, Adelphi University women's soccer senior captain Morgan Salmon was honored as the 2024 NE10 Woman of the Year Tuesday night, during the conference's annual end-of-the-year awards banquet.

The fifth-ever Adelphi recipient of the distinguished NE10 Woman of the Year honor, Salmon joins such acclaimed Panthers as Brenna Martini (2018), Chelsea Abreu (2019), Alison Johnson (2021) and Jackie Brown (2022).

Salmon will next be put forth as the conference's nominee for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year award, which is presented annually at the NCAA Convention every January.

"I'm incredibly honored to be the recipient of this award. I've had a lot of amazing men and women come before me at Adelphi and they've really paved the path," Salmon reflected. "These four years have been a challenge, but the support from Adelphi is what made it easier. The athletic department at Adelphi is a gold standard in my opinion. I'm very proud to be a Panther and I will always be grateful for everything they've given me."

Salmon's playing time consisted of starting 51 of her 53 career games at the pivotal center back position, culminating in an NE10 Defensive Player of the Year (second in program history) and United Soccer Coaches All-America honor for the four-year starter.

As infallible as she was in preventing goals, Salmon delivered just as brilliantly in putting her team on the scoreboard, tallying a career-best five assists in 2023 -- three of which resulted in game-winning goals.

Ultimately, the Panthers, under Salmon's captaincy, not only returned to the NE10 Championship final in 2023, but captured the school's first NCAA Division II East Region Championship in 20 years. Her final start as a Panther came at the NCAA Division II National Championship, where Salmon played all ninety minutes of the team's Final Four contest against Washburn University.

Not to be overshadowed by her on-field play, Salmon completed her Bachelor's degree this May in Nursing, maintaining a 3.854 cumulative grade-point average along the way. She was named this year's recipient of the NE10 Women's Soccer Sport Excellence Award and bestowed the title of CSC First Team Academic All-American.

A representative to Adelphi's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the University's dedicated chapter to Morgan's Message, Salmon -- since arriving at Adelphi -- has formed a continuing four-year-long relationship with TOPSoccer -- a nearby ommunity-based training program in West Hempstead that helps young athletes with disabilities.
