NE10 Faces in the Crowd: Week 3

Tyreek Smith's Massive Day on the Gridiron Leads The Week's Headlines

Each week during the academic year, the NE10 honors Athletes of the Week for all of its 24 sponsored sports while they are in season. Faces in the Crowd shines a spotlight on outstanding on-field performances that didn't earn Athlete of the Week recognition, while also highlighting academic or community efforts from student-athletes across the league. 

Below are this week's NE10 Faces in the Crowd.
 

CARLY ISSING
School:
 Adelphi
Sport: Women's Soccer
Position: Forward 
Class: Senior
Hometown: Plainview, N.Y.

Issing scored the game winning goal in 1-0 win over Southern Connecticut on Saturday. Issing now has three goals in her last two games, surpassing her season total from both 2023 and 2022.

CELESTE PAGLIAROLI
School:
 Pace
Sport: Field Hockey
Position: Goalie 
Class: Sophomore
Hometown: Yorktown Heights, N.Y.

Pagliaroli earned two wins for the Setters during an impressive week in net. The sophomore recorded a .885 save percentage with 23 total saves. She surrendered only three goals averaging 1.50 goals per game. Pagliaroli picked up wins against Slippery Rock (Sept. 16) and IUP (Sept. 21) in a strong effort in goal. Her performance on Saturday against IUP included a game-saving stop on a penalty stroke to keep the game within striking distance for the Blue and Gold. 

CLAUDIA KEITH
School:
 SNHU
Sport: Women's Soccer
Position: Goalie 
Class: Junior
Hometown: Danvers, Mass.

Keith has stopped 17 of the 18 shots she has faced this season, as the eighth-ranked SNHU women's soccer team is off to a 3-0-2 start. Keith has four clean sheets, a 0.20 GAA and .944 save percentage. Keith began the season with a shutout streak of 213:17 and is currently riding a new scoreless stretch of 236:42.

HALEIGH WARD
School: Assumption
Sport: Women's Soccer
Position: Forward 
Class: Senior
Hometown: North Kingstown, R.I.

Ward recorded two goals in Assumption's 3-1 win against the University of Maine Fort Kent. She currently leads the conference in goals (6), points (14), and game-winning goals (2). Nationally, the Ocean State native ranks third in both goals and points, as she has helped Assumption remain unbeaten early this season.


IRENE GARBO
School: Saint Anselm
Sport: Women's Tewnnis
Class: Junior
Hometown: Assemini, Italy

Garbo remained undefeated at No. 1 singles this week with wins over SNHU’s Justina Haver (6-4, 6-4) and New Haven’s Valentinna Ferrarini (6-1, 7-6 (10-7)). She is now 4-0 this season at the top flight for the Hawks.


JAYDIN NOWAK
School: Adelphi
Sport: Volleyball
Position: Libero
Class: Junior
Hometown: Monroe, Mich.

Serving as the primary libero for three matches this week, Jaydin Nowak anchored a defense that held opponents to a .129 hitting percentage as she tallied 6.40 digs per set. Her total of 214 digs sees her sit second in the NE10. Her best match of the week - a four set win over Queens - was a 31-dig effort in which she also added five assists and three service ace to boot. 

LUCAS YOUNG
School: New Haven
Sport: Football
Position: Defensive Line
Class: Sophomore
Hometown: North Arlington, N.J.

Young sacked the quarterback twice last week against Franklin Pierce, vaulting him toward the top of the NE10 leaderboard when it comes to getting into the backfield this season.

SHANNON GIFFORD
School: SNHU
Sport: Field Hockey
Class: Graduate Student
Hometown: Goffstown, N.H.

Gifford helped lead the Penmen defense to its 3-0 shutout of No. 3 Assumption last Monday by recording the team's first defensive save of the season.  Gifford, who was an All-NE10 softball player at SNHU, is playing her first season of field hockey with the 3-1 Penmen in 2024.

SYDNEY MYERS
School: Southern Connecticut State
Sport: Women's Soccer
Position: Midfielder
Class: Sophomore
Hometown: Morrisville, N.Y.

Myers recorded two scores and an assist, making her mark on three of the Owls’ four goals in a 4-0 victory over Holy Family.

TYREEK SMITH
School: Pace
Sport: Football
Position: Wide Reciever
Class: Senior
Hometown: Stratford, Conn.

Smith recorded nine catches for 209 receiving yards (long of 75) and included two touchdowns in the 23-21 win over Post.  The performances is the third-best nationally by a receiver this season in DII.
