NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The reigning Northeast 10 Outdoor Track and Field Champions, the SCSU Owls played strong hosts Friday, jumping out to commanding leads in both champioship hunts after 15 total scored events (seven women's / eight men's).
Hosting at Jess Dow Field, SCSU posted 118 points and a 54 point lead on the men's side. The Owls lead by 43 in the women's competition. There are eight and nine teams in the fields respectively.
Southern Connecticut won all but one field event contested on the championship's opening day. Aidan Chittenden won the Hammer Throw in commanding fashion at 56.06m, seven meter better than Assumption's Craig Gnatek and Franklin Pierce's Seamus Considine. All three men are underclassmen. Senior Peyton Adams won the Pole Vault at 4.35m, Ty Phelan won the Long Jump, Celine Bozukluian won the Hammer Throw, rookie Liliana Quill bested her teammate Maddie Hathorn in the Pole Vault, Deja Fitzpatrick-Bell won the Long Jump, freshman trevor Dixon won with the Javelin and Lawrence Hicks posted a season-best 2.05m jump to win the High Jump.
The only non-SCSU field win belonged to Saint Anselm where Sophia Morin and Harmony Marquez went 1-2 in the Javelin.
Track competition consisted of mostly prelim events, however there were several medals handed out in longer distance runs. Jonathan Volpe won the 1500m for SCSU while Lily Tedford won for Bentley. Owls PJ Dauphinais and Will Lamburn won the 10K and Southern Conn. took both the men's and women's 4x800 Relays.
