Adelphi Win Second Straight East Regional Title

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Using a goal from Alexandra Leggio in the second half of the first overtime period, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team punched its ticket back to the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Final Four, topping Pace University 13-12, on Saturday.

In it's second overtime contest in as many games the Panthers (18-3) return to the Final Four for the second consecutive season.

Leggio finished with a hat trick in the win, as Marielle Colalillo and Julia Foppiano finished with five and four points, respectively.

Adelphi held a three-goal edge after the first quarter of work and an even second frame saw the Panthers lead by three at the halftime break. The Setters used a 4-3 third period to come within two heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

The home team was outscored 3-1 in the last quarter as Pace netted the equalizer on a man-up possession with 8:30 left. It was Leggio who put the Cats ahead 12-11, but Gigi Genovese scored the 12-all goal. Adelphi managed four shots on goal in the ensuing minutes, but Elsa Branco was responsible for topping each of those shots, forcing an overtime frame.

Danielle Becker caused a turnover in the second part of the first overtime frame that allowed the Panthers to head down field and score, with Colalillo finding Leggio for the gamewinner. Branco recorded 10 saves between the pipes as Marchetta accounted for 12.

The Panthers will play in the National Semifinal for the second straight year, and hope to make a second National Title appearance. On Thursday, May 22nd, the Panthers will play Slippery Rock at approximately 7:30pm in Salem, VA.
