"This morning the University of New Haven informed the Northeast-10 Conference that it has officially accepted an invitation to join the Northeast Conference and begin a reclassification to NCAA Division I. New Haven will join the NEC for the 2025-26 academic year as the Chargers' 17-year tenure in the NE10 comes to an end on June 30, 2025.
The NE10 is proud of its affiliation with NCAA Division II and the quality student-athlete experiences we work hard to provide. The Conference facilitates tremendous opportunities for our student-athletes to engage in high level athletics competition - all 11 members won an NE10 title this academic year and 46 total teams advanced into NCAA championship fields, among the top measures in the entire NCAA. Division II offers the best championship access ratios across the association and prioritizes responsible use of resources in this challenging time for higher education. Our high persistence and graduation rates speak to our student athletes balancing academic obligations while contributing in meaningful ways to their campus communities.
While we are disappointed that New Haven has made this decision, the NE10 believes in our Conference mission and we are steadfast in the belief that DII offers the best path forward to preserve the student-athlete experience given the uncertainty surrounding the DI model. We will remain diligent in addressing our future."
