NE10 Faces in the Crowd: Groundbreaking Discoveries

Pair of Saint Michael's Student-Athletes Contribute to Breakthrough Alzheimer's Research

Each week during the academic year, the NE10 honors Athletes of the Week for all of its 24 sponsored sports while they are in season. Faces in the Crowd shines a spotlight on outstanding on-field performances that didn't earn Athlete of the Week recognition, while also highlighting academic or community efforts from student-athletes across the league.

Below are this week's NE10 Faces in the Crowd.

ABBY ROMAN AND MELANIE WINTERS
School:
Saint Michael's
Sport: Soccer & Lacrosse

Researchers from Saint Michael's College and the University of Vermont made a groundbreaking new discovery that provides a better understanding of how Alzheimer's disease develops in the human brain.

Guided by previous research of spider brains, the scientists uncovered evidence of a "waste canal system" in the human brain that internalizes waste from healthy neurons. They discovered that this system can undergo catastrophic swelling, which leads to the degeneration of brain tissue, a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease.

Supported by the Vermont Biomedical Research Network (VBRN), the research was carried out in collaboration among Dr. Ruth Fabian-Fine (Saint Michael's College, UVM Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine), Dr. John DeWitt (UVM Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine, UVM Medical Center), Dr. Adam Weaver (Saint Michael's College), women's lacrosse senior Abby Roman, and women's soccer senior Melanie Winters.
