OCEANSIDE, N.Y. — Adelphi men's tennis claimed its second-straight Northeast-10 Conference Championship title on Sunday with a 4-2 victory over Franklin Pierce at the Point Set Indoor Racquet Club.
After rain moved the championship match indoors, the senior pairing of Reece Farrow and Hugo Munoz Reinoso got off to a fast start, winning the first doubles match of the day, 6-3.
The Ravens took the second match which locked the No. 3 duo of Louca Bertone and Andrea Albiero into a fight for the first point of the day. The pair came back from being down 5-3 to go up 6-5 but Franklin Pierce was resilient. Hugo Diaz Avila and Orlando Guerrero pushed the Panthers to a tiebreak, winning the twelfth game and then won seven of the eight tiebreak points to earn the Ravens the first point.
While Franklin Pierce wanted to keep momentum on their side, Albiero would not allow it. The freshman dominated his No. 4 singles match and sent screams through Point Set Racquet Club to fire up his teammates.
Ralph Hiebel took the No. 3 singles match to put his team back on top, but too many Panthers had momentum in their matches.
Spyridon Papageorgiou earned a convincing 6-2, 6-4 win in his No. 5 match and Rodrigo Ochoa earned an electric 7-5, 6-3 win to put Adelphi in the driver's seat.
It all came down to the Adelphi's No. 1 singles player in Marko Jovanovic. The three-time NE10 Player of the Year was able to seal the deal with a 7-5, 6-2 victory to give Adelphi back-to-back conference championships.
Jovanovic was named the tournament's most valuable player and earned the conference's Elite 24 award for being the player with the highest GPA at the championship site. Albiero and Ochoa were named to the all-tournament team.
The Panthers have earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and will learn their first round opponent tomorrow night at 8:00 PM during the NCAA selection show.
